Children witnessing and experiencing violence

Children living in a home where violence occurs are more likely to be subjected to violence themselves. In Sweden, around 150,000 children live with a parent who at some time has been subjected to violence by the other parent. The Social Services Act has established that children who have been victims of crime and children who have witnessed violence are entitled to support and assistance from social services.

Children who witness or experience violence against a parent are in a particularly vulnerable position when they are dependent on both the victim and the perpetrator. It is therefore important for there to be adults who can see and talk to the child about what is happening. When a woman with children is placed in sheltered accommodation at Uppsala Women’s Shelter, the children are always offered counselling.
